Edwards Motors Worcester stops selling Volvos

$

Just driven past the Edwards Motors dealership near Kempsey this morning to see them removing the Volvo sign outside. A phone call to spares for some leather seat cleaning kits confirmed that they stopped selling Volvos a few days ago. Since they also sell Kia and Mazda (and motor homes) and dedicated quite a small space to Volvo perhaps it's not a surprise. I wonder if Volvo are following the route other manufacturers have taken of insisting on large dedicated premises - I was amazed by the sheer size and opulence of the new BMW/Mini dealership in Cheltenham when I went for a test drive in a Mini.

Supplementary: apparently Audi on the Bromyard Road in Worcester are moving to a new site at Six Ways, north of Worcester, later this year and a Volvo dealership will take over those premises.

850 windscreen squirter parts help please

The good lady brought her lovely 49,000 mile car to me to check over prior to mot, leaving me all of 15 minutes to sort any problems. Silly cow let the washer bottle run dry - again, resulting in a partial blockage. Dribbles from the bonnet, headlight washers fine. Yes I have tried pinching off pipe to lights and squirting some more, didnt achieve anything.

Assuming I cant clear it with an airline (which I dont have anyway), which parts are required when I replace all the hose and fittings ?
I can see a 3-way junction thing, a filter, theres probably more.
The filter looks like a plastic in-line fuel filter, the sort we used to get on carburettored cars. Easily obtained.
Anyone know the hose size ? internal diameter ?

Volvo V90 D4 R Design - White

Just some notes (in no particular order) after having driven above for 4 days over some 500+ miles on A and M roads, many thanks to Volvo for the extend trial.

Engine is really nice, as is the autobox and would happily have this in a V70 over my D5 (but I would miss the sound of the D5). Only the odd hesitation but overall great, a very quiet engine.Suspension is good but the car feels a lot bigger and heavier than the V70. I was surprised to see 18” rims and not bigger as it’s a R spec but it had 45 profile (over my own 40) so look bigger, mind the bigger profile gives it a nice ride. The switchable driving mode makes a difference, usually had it in comfort but tried the sportier setting and it really tightens up with throttle response noticeably quicker.

The adaptive cruise control is fabulous and it will be a must in my next car, the pilot assist less important but very clever and probably well worth having if you sit in slow traffic a lot but it is not fool proof. Pilot Assist is something I personally would only use up to maybe 30mph.

Another must (for this big car) is the 360 camera, really clever when you reverse, you think there is a drone sitting 20mts over the car, a superb aid.

Digital speedo dash is really nice and works very well and it dips to night mode very well. The ipad style central panel is also great and is easy to get used to but I’d like a matt screen (like the speedo screen) instead of a gloss version. One the subject of gloss, I know its fashion with gloss highlights inside cars nowadays but its form of function with lots of reflections (never mind additional finger prints). I prefer the matt surface in our V70’s as its more practical and easier to live with less distractions.

The wing mirror design sitting on the doors is again latest fashion. I do not like it as they sit back a bit so I have to turn the head more. The BLIS is however superb, being integrated into the glass with a glowing arc, superb.

The Car had a full glass roof, really neat but not so noticeable when being the driver but rear passengers liked it a lot. Personally a long way down the options list for me, but tempting for the single reason that it means less polishing.

No memory seats in this car at this price! Hmm.

Car is lower and noticeably so when entering the car. Rear leg room very good and nice touches here and there in the cabin (rear blinds in doors nice). Miles has been written re lack of load space. The rear glass get dirty as much as on the V70 but the rear wiper is very good and cover lots of glass area. Loading wise it is ok but I think Volvo missed a trick when they could have added a curved rear screen like on the Astra Estate giving more boot space whilst still looking sportier. Folding down seats from the boot is a breeze. I think the carpet is cheaper than in the V70 and wonder what it will look like after a few years of use.

Would I buy one? Not the R version, not in white, I think it would be a XC as it’ll sit higher. Must have’s are; memory seats plus the 360 camera.

Parked car this morning whilst picking up granddaughter, locked as usual. Came back out 15 minutes later and all four windows were completely down. They were definitely all up and secure when left. Any one else had similar experience?

£650 for a Year 2 service

$

My car's in for a Year 2 service and I've just been left stunned by the cost. The Volvo servicer price indicator shows a cost of £374 for a Year 2 service.

My local Volvo dealer quoted me £440, but there's nothing over and above the standard maintenance that they carry out.

Reluctantly I accepted as it was convenient because they collect and deliver the car back to me.

They've just now phoned me and said that I should also get the brake fluid and coolant replaced at a cost of £202 as Volvo recommends this every two years, bringing the total cost of the service close to £650!!!

Have I been bent over a barrel? This is an official Volvo dealership. Volvo's own recommended schedule for coolant and brake fluid replacement is two years, so why is this another £200?

Clutch slow disengage

Had my clutch/flywheel and slave cylinder changed around 4 months ago but today when driving i noticed that the clutch takes a second to disengage after its pressed to the floor. e.g. if i go to put the car in 1st gear straight after pressing the clutch down it wont go in but if i press the clutch down and wait a few seconds it will go in 1st gear. all gear shifts work with the engine off aswell. any ideas? thanks

Now what?!!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've just put a new lock on one of my back doors as Volvo say it's the reason for the alarm going off. Coming home from work today I got a message which flashed literally for one second. All I could read was the word alarm, then it was gone. Does anyone know why, or what it means?
It certainly makes me think I replaced the lock for nothing!

Speaker issues

$

My good Sport has just developed an issue with the sound system - namely no sound out of the places Volvo put speakers (dash, front doors, rear doors and D-pillar). All of them went off simultaneously. Sub still thumping.

This is taking place with three different head units (two different Sony ones and a JVC one. It is taking place with three different ISO-to-Volvo adaptors - and two different Sony-to-ISO adapters and of course the JVC-to-ISO adaptor.

So, first thought - a speaker is short and the head units are protecting themselves. BUT with a multimeter all the speaker wires at the head unit end show about 4 Ohms (as they should).

Odder still, yesterday on my way to shout at Halfrauds (quite unjustifiably) on my drive all head units fine - and the one in the car went quiet again halfway to Halfrauds. All head units test OK at Halfrauds, but none work correctly in the car.

Now to my mind this suggests that somewhere a plug-in connector in the loom is wiggling about (since I've ruled out the adaptors). Is there one, maybe somewhere under the dash? I hate taking the dash out!

Next possibility, a wire somewhere has been rubbing on a metal edge. Insulation worn, intermittent short to earth, head units go into self-protect mode. This will mean removing all the door cards, tracing the wires to the D-pillar speakers, hoiking out the door speakers and dash speakers, and poking things up door pillars until I find the culprit. Bah.

Open to helpful suggestions where to start!

V50 General : - VolvoV50 Diesel

Hi all,
I am asking on behalf of a friend who is not computer literate. He has a Volvo V50 Diesel in for repair. I am afraid I have forgotten the year, although I think that it may be a 56 plate. The car will open ok, and when you put the key in the ignition lights will turn on, but the car will not start. the starter will not even turn. On the screen on the dash it says the car is immobilised and to read owners handbook.
I have read the fault codes and came up with the following

CEM-8F01 Hazard light switch faulty signal (RED fault)
SWM-020A Steering wheel module Calibration fault (RED Fault)
AUD-0021 Control module Internal fault (Yellow Fault)
AUD-0025 Loudspeaker left front faulty signal (Yellow Fault)

There is no engine control module fault and there does not seem to be a immobiliser fault either. This one has me stumped. Can anyone please shed some light.
Thank you

Hey....

I just bought my first volvo. Xc90 d5 awd se 2010 automatic. Reading forum for a few days now and finding bit of information about that beast :)))

This time i would like to ask:
The car has rear parking sensors but i would like to buy front onws also. Do you know guys any place where i can check them? Originals? Or from flebay? Would be great to know, also do i need to buy anyting else or they can be connected to rear ones? My garage said i need a separate box for it!

And 2nd question will be: any of you have reverse camera? If yes, any recommendations?

Thanks a lot

General: - Radio/CD Problems

Hi

I guess this has been covered elsewhere previously, so just a reminder about radio/CD problems and repairs. If you're looking for someone to do any work on your HU-XXX unit, I can highly recommend this company:

Central Services
Riverside Avenue West
Station Road
Lawford
Manningtree
Essex CO11 1UN

Tel: 01206 396 272
Email: enquiries@centralservicescaraudio.co.uk

My wife's XC70 HU-850 lost all illumination and the fader control was intermittently losing the front speakers. As I live in Cambridge, it was easier for me to take it rather than post it. I dropped it off on Monday and collected it today. It wasn't cheap (£120), but better than a new unit or trying to source a compatible unit.

David at Central Services obviously knows his stuff as he knew about airbag issues with disconnecting the climate control unit without first disconnecting the battery etc.

Great service.

Keith

Cooling System Problem...

$

Evening all,

My cooling system is giving me some problems, and I'm scratching my head a bit. Although the temp gauge is steady as a rock in its usual central spot, my fan keeps cutting in and staying on and the engine Bay feels very hot. Also, the top and bottom radiator hoses have absolutely no give in them as though they're solid, so there's obviously a lot of pressure in there. After the engine has cooled down the hoses become pliable again. It is also losing water, and quite quickly, but I cannot see it leaking anywhere! There are no leaks under the bonnet - not even the hoses servicing the matrix right at the back. I don't think the matrix is leaking either - I changed it about two years ago, and as I use it as a van I'm not worried about aesthetics and never replaced the carpets - looking under the solid mats I expected a blue swimming pool but neither side is even damp. Could it be the head gasket? It runs perfectly, and there's no sign of oil in the water, or water in the oil. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance!!

V70: Information - EPB vida service quiery

hi everyone
bought myself some spanking new rear discs and pads for me v 70 2009 p3 2.4 D thinking
right I can do this can I ? after all theres a few vids out there with others changing out the discs and pads
on said vids ( and brake pad replacement instruction sheet in package) it mentions replacing EPB attachment bolts ( 2 torx T-30 ) plus the rubber seal on EPB when reattaching it to caliper during replacement
okay , so I phone dealership in my area and person on end of phone says ahh that be 60 quid for 4 bolts and 2 seals but ' to be honest thats a job to be only done through VIDA system by dealership as apparently if EPB electronic parking brake isnt put into service mode prior to uninstalling discs pads etc then the ECU will think old pads are on EPB may then not initiate properly causing brake or later caliper failure ie could end up costly
IS this correct ? I mean i do not doubt man on phone is quoting correct dealership recommended procedure but these guys in the vids are manually winding back the piston and detaching EPB with no mention of this

Am I throwing caution to wind dangerously here ? also hanes manual talks about possibility of flipping seal in master servo with brake fluid pressure being forced back causing total failure gaahh now that sounds headache/nightmare danger
Please Im not trying to skimp
by avoiding dealership prices but I do want to know if this is doable manually without all this worry without being risky or is this strickly VIDA territory
any advice would be appreciated

My sat nav used to pop up a message with "traffic on route, new route xx mins quicker, reroute?"

In the last month, there's no messages, just the TMC triangle, and the option to view what the traffic is. No option to reroute around.

Been through the menus and cannot find any option for reroute etc. Anyone any idea?

TIA.

Cheap pattern parts :-(

I know it's often debated whether it is really worth paying Volvo prices for spares when they're not made by Volvo... so I thought I would share my recent experience.

Rear wheel bearing was starting to get noisy on my XC90 (160k nearly) and we all know the Volvo ones aint cheap. So I bought a mid price range pattern part from e-bay (Firstline, about £90). Mistake.

All went well until I was building it back up - I've fitted brake shoe adjusters so I put the brake disc back on and adjusted them - then I refitted the caliper and noticed the wheel was locked solid. After a bit of examination I noticed that the brake disc was fouling the caliper, so I assumed the hub face was slightly thicker on the new bearing assembly and prepared to modify the caliper... then common sense came over me and I stripped it all again to inspect it.

The problem was that the mating face of the new bearing assembly to the hub on the car is not exactly the same shape as the old one, and in places it was bigger and hence overlapped the back plate meaning it was sticking out on one side by about 1mm - this would have had a significant effect on tracking etc.

Hence I took the back plate off and cut away some metal so it all went together properly. Noise cured now, but once again I wish I'd forked out for the genuine part....
