V70: Gearbox - O Dear, Oh Dear, V70 autobox rebuild?

$

Bought a lovely T24 auto, 2003' 122k last week. Lovely car in great condition. A dream to drive on the short test run but on the way home noticed a few odd gear changes, the very occasional thump as it dropped into 2nd abruptly. Read many threads, watched loads of Utube on Gibbons oil changes, valve body repairs or replacements. Today took the car to a good auto transmission repair shop, very impressive and good service. They said there were no electrical codes so damage must be internal. They obviously regard this as the best option but £2200 for a gearbox rebuild! How likely is this to be sound advice or should I try the Gibbons, valve repair route first?
Has anyone got any comments as I am a bit lost in all this. Being retired with my good car fixing days some time in the past I'm not sure I can take on any work like valve body replacement. Sound advice appreciated on this my first post.

OEM Brake Pads or Pagids?

My 2009 V70 D5 R-Design needs new pads all round. FRF want around £113 for all my parts. Eurocarparts have Pagids for £40 cheaper.

I figure I only change my pads every 4-5 years with my mileage, so the extra £40 for OEMs is a small additional price to pay.

However, guy at ECP said Pagids are OEM quality, and may be who make Volvo pads anyway.

If they are effectively the same, then there's little point burning the extra £40. Even if Pagids do make Volvo brake pads, would the quality of the aftermarket type be up with the OEMs? Is it likely they are the same brake pads?

V70 2.5 TDi Starting Problem

Hello Everyone,

Looking for some help with my starting issue, now bare with me....

1998 TDi 165K (just run in) had some starting issues last year, replaced glow plugs to no avail and then fuel filter also to no avail. Took it to an independent Volvo specialist who discovered pump timing was out, this rectified the problem how ever it is still not the snappiest starting engine.

The problem I have now is from cold then engine turns over a few times before starting, I do let the plugs preheat for a few seconds, this problem is worsened if the car has been stood for a few days.

The biggest problem is if the car has been started from cold only briefly to move it on the drive then switched off, its a right pig to get started again after this. The car always starts eventually and runs like a dream just fear the cold weather and wear and tear on the battery might leave me stuck somewhere!

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? My thoughts are plugs/battery/wiring/injectors or poor compression maybe? The pump timing has been set right.. thats not to say something hasn't changed in the last year?

I don't often venture from the 700/900 section but have come in here looking for some info on V70's.
One has come up for sale where my other half works, it's cheap and looks in reasonable condition.
Only slight worry is the mileage which is 256k apparently !

My knowledge of Volvo's beyond 1997 is pretty much non existent and I was wondering just how bad it might be. It does have a full service history and MOT until late next year.

It's a 2.4 with a whole 140bhp according the the advert, I guess it's non turbo so at least that can't be worn out !

How cheap does it need to be to make it worth a look ?

Hi all,
Complete newbie here but have been learning a lot from this brilliant forum. I have recently got my Amazon and drove 690 Km's in one go ( except for ferry) from London back to Northern Ireland, slow and steady but enjoyed it although she's an automatic so not very quick. Currently in body shop getting some repairs completed. My query is alloy wheels, will a set of 240 volvo Virgo rims fit on without any spacing issues please. Have read lots about rims on the forum but can't find a definitive answer. Thanks in advance.

XC70: Electrical - Headlight malfunction indicated on dash

$

Hi, I just bought a 2008 xc70. I changed a parking light because the dash read multiple lights out. It was the only one I saw that was out. After I put things back together and tested the lights they all worked but my display now says headlight malfunction service required.
I plugged in my dice unit and it referred to the problem as the left light plugged into the right socket or vice versa.
Is it possible to do this somehow? I bought from the original owner and he said he replaced one of the bi xenon headlights.
At this point I wonder if the plug could be wrong somehow? The light blinks for the headlight movement on the center consol.
Thoughts?

Ignition barrel problem... Advice ?

Got a 2004 v50 with the usual ignition barrel problem :(

The last week it has been getting worse and worse till today... It wouldnt start :( Taken half the dash off and gave it a few bangs and it started after a while.

Im either going to bridge my starter and put a rocker switch in or replace the barrel if its not expensive as I have in mind. Anyone have a price or part no?

Is it a straight swap over with the full unit?... details?
Anyone opened theirs and repaired the contacts inside ect?

Thanks

Beware of EuroCarParts Warranty

Thought I would just give a heads up to make sure others are aware of their warranty process that could leave your car off the road for 6 weeks and/or involve additional cost.

Basically if you order online or by telephone for home delivery (the only way I could get these parts from them), if something goes wrong you have to post them back to their head office at your expense. They will then send faulty part to manufacturer and only if they deem the part to be faulty will they offer a refund or replacement/repair of returned part. This process takes anything from 4-6 weeks after them receiving the parts. Now a drive shaft is not light so not going to be easy or cheap to get a courier. They will accept them at a store, but they are not tracked internally and if they go missing - tough you've lost your money - so they strongly advise against this.

They have said I can buy a new part and fit this whilst waiting, but this leaves me close to £300 out of pocket and not knowing if they will find some spurious reason to reject the claim and not refund my original purchase.

I did start to discuss that the goods were unfit for purpose under Sale of Goods act and my contract was with ECP and not GKN, but I was quickly stopped and told if I wanted to discuss this I had to put it in writing.

From now on I won't be buying anything from ECP that I can't get at my local store. I will be using a proper motor factor for this!!!

The parts I purchased were a pair of GKN drive shafts for the Volvo as the inner CV joints were worn and boots split (I bought it knowing this). Fitting the parts went straight forward and i used VIDA for the correct procedure. After just 6 weeks of use I was driving at about 20mph when I suddenly lost drive with a nice noise.

Investigating this showed the driver's side shaft had come out of the diff as the support bearing had moved on the shaft - which it shouldn't do.

Amazon: - Leaky windscreen

Every time it rains, the right side floor gets soaked. I've been fixing a lot of other things but it got so bad I had to take action. First I removed the trims both inside and outside. Straight away I could see a big crack where water was getting in. After cutting out the original factory rubber which was hard as a rock, I found that the Tin Worm has been there. It will require a welded patch but for now I'm just fixing it the best I can with wire brush and paint. Scraped the old sealer along with some paint. The lady at the paint store mixed me up a pint of VOLVO-79 in enamel. Masked, then sprayed 2 coats of grey primer followed by 2 coats of enamel. My previous experience with enamel wasn't good, but today it turned out great. After dinner it had hardened up so my wife and I used the old pull string technique to install the windscreen. It was easier than I thought it would be. Still need to install the trims and apply some sealant.

Here are some pictures for your enjoyment!

2003 XC90 T6 AC heat fan blower problem

$

Hi,

Since battery changed last year, my 2003 XC90 AC has problem.

First, when I turn on the car, the fan is always at the "MAX" level (all green lights are on).

Recently after drove the car for check engine light diagnosis at dealer (dealer cleared the code), I found the fan does not startup even its setting is still at 'MAX' when I turn on the car, that mean when I turn on the car, fan level is on the MAX, but blower does not startup. When I turn up/down the fan, I can hear something on Climate control panel (under radio panel).

Any ideas about this issue? fuse is ok, do I need to change fan blower motor, or bring it to dealer for diagnosis?

Thanks.

Susan

(1999 V70) Sudden Cut-out. Help please!

Help please!
I recently acquired an ancient but good 1999 V70, but yesterday I had a rather scary experience. I was waiting at the red traffic lights on a 3 lane roundabout when my 1999 V70 suddenly cut out. I tried several times to restart, but to no avail. The ignition warning lights were all on, starter motor operating fine, but no response at all from the engine. As the lights changed to green, and I was in a potentially dangerous position, I managed to cross in front of the 3 lane A52 traffic using the starter motor and first, then second gear to reach the kerb on the other side of the road and out of danger before the A52 lights turned to green. Goodness knows what I would have done if it hadn't been a manual gearbox! Strangely I was on my way to my local garage, so I contacted them to come and tow the car in and check it over. They could find nothing wrong. It'd had a new set of plugs and leads when I bought it, and it started first time as it always has, and there was no trace of the intermittent misfire I'd originally booked it in for. I collected it later in the day, and all seemed fine until it happened again. This time, after a short delay, it restarted and I was on my way.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? It was very unsettling!
It would seem to be an electrical fault as there was no warning at all.
Could it be connected to the locking/security system?
Any help or advice would be welcome please, as I have no idea how to test the system for faults.
Thanks.

in the process of replacing a (supercharged) range rover sport, and came across the new XC90 last night. was originally thinking of a MB GL, but the new XC90 looks really nice.

However, the volvo website doesn't appear to offer all the options at present. we are thinking of going for a D5 spec'd up one car last night and came to around 62k.

anyone thinking of getting one and if so what sort of spec are you going for.......

S80: Stereo/SatNav/Phone - usb/ipod control unit

Hello everyone, just wondered if anybody has had this problem I have just now.
I have retro fitted an ipod/usb control module and cables into my S80, which I bought from the excellent people in Volvopartshop. Very easy to install, just unplug the cables and plug in the parts easy.
Problems started when I took the car to get the software installed. Its now been in 3 times but still no joy they keep coming back with "Can't find hardware/ control unit to install software".
Checked the wireing all OK, even checked the fuses all OK.
Just wondered if anyone else would know of or have a fix for this?
